About merle

Inspiration
I'm inspired by nature, community and place. My creativity is rooted in the East Coast of Scotland where I live and work. I'd describe my work as eclectic and hard to pigeonhole. It's mixed media as I'm happy using whatever's at hand. Be it paper, fabric, wood, wool, even furniture - I'll re-purpose and reuse.
The "finds" set the course. They take me on flights of fancy.
Like the merle as the blackbird is known in Scots.
My watercolours, acrylics, oils and pastels, print making tools, brushes and heirloom sewing machine help create a re-usery of sorts wherever I happen to be.

My Offerings

Working with fabric
I work with any discarded natural fabrics that I can find. I use fabric paints and vegetable prints to make repeat patterns. The printed fabric is then used to make a range of things from cushion covers,to re-upholstered furniture, to bags and pouches depending on the size of the printed fabric.

Working with paper
I love to make collages using all sorts of discarded paper. Old magazines, sweetie wrappers, packaging. If it catches my eye, I'll use it. Or keep it in a box for some new project.

Re-using old picture frames
I collect old picture frames and they dictate the piece of art that they will eventually frame. I'm happy to work on board, canvas or paper, often repainting the frames to suit the finished work before reassembling them again.

Working with discarded objects
I often don't know why I'm drawn to something. But if I can see a way to use it to make something, I will. This means most of my work is eclectic and a one off.
